Cyclamen

Cyclamen

Cyclamen are stunning plants with colorful, heart-shaped leaves and unique flowers. They're a bit different from other houseplants in terms of care, but with the right approach, they thrive beautifully. Here’s a guide to help you care for them:

Sunlight

  • Bright, indirect sunlight is best for cyclamen. They can handle a bit of direct morning sunlight, but too much can scorch their delicate leaves.
  • If growing indoors, place them near a window with filtered light. They don’t do well in low light conditions.

Water:

  • Watering is one of the trickier parts of cyclamen care. Water them from the base, not the top, to prevent water from sitting on the tuber (which can rot).
  • Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water when the top of the soil feels dry. Avoid over-watering, as this can cause the tuber to rot.
  • Do not let water sit in the saucer under the pot—empty it out after watering to ensure proper drainage.

Temperature

  • Cyclamen prefer cooler temperatures between 50°F and 65°F (10°C and 18°C). They’re not fans of heat, and temperatures above 70°F (21°C) can cause them to go dormant.
  • Keep them away from heat sources like radiators, fireplaces, or direct drafts from air conditioners or heaters.
  • Cyclamen prefer well-draining soil that is slightly acidic. A good mix for them is a standard houseplant soil with added perlite or sand for better drainage.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.
