African Violet

African Violet

African violets are popular houseplants known for their beautiful, colorful flowers and soft, velvety leaves. They can be a bit particular, but with the right care, they will reward you with lovely blooms. Here’s a guide to help you care for your African violet:

Sunlight:

  • African violets need bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, so place them near a bright window with sheer curtains to filter the light.
  • If growing indoors, east- or west-facing windows work well. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the leaves to burn.
  • If natural light is limited, you can also use grow lights designed for plants to provide them with the necessary light.

Water:

  • Water from the bottom to avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can cause spots or lead to rot. Use a shallow saucer or tray to allow the plant to absorb water.
  • Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Check the top inch of soil with your finger—if it feels dry, it’s time to water.
  • Use lukewarm water, as cold water can shock the plant. Let the water sit out for a few hours to reach room temperature before watering.
  • Avoid letting water sit in the saucer after watering, as this can cause root rot.

Temperature:

  • African violets prefer temperatures between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). They thrive in a steady, warm environment and do not like cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
  • Keep them away from heaters, air conditioners, and cold windowsills.
  • African violets prefer moderate humidity. They can tolerate regular indoor humidity levels but may benefit from slightly higher humidity.
  • Increase humidity by placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water (without the pot sitting directly in the water), or use a humidifier in the room.
  • Avoid placing the plant in overly humid or damp conditions, as this can promote fungal
  • African violets need well-draining, light soil. A potting mix specifically for African violets or a regular houseplant mix with added perlite or vermiculite will work well.
  • Do not use garden soil—it’s too heavy and doesn’t drain well enough for African violets.
